Touching The Sky
Today, Dubai officially opened the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world. Surprisingly a few months late too. But it's still an amazing achievement to produce something 800 metres tall in such a short space of time. Here it can take the council a month to just fill a hole in the road.
As many of you know, Gail & I visit the emirate for a holiday at least once a year. Back in Jan 08, we took a helicopter flight over the city. This included the Burj Dubai. Here's what the area looked like then. Still an impressive sight you must agree. The four buildings to the right is the Dubai Mall, which is reckoned to be the largest shopping centre in the world.

A great shot of the Burj! I'm gonna google it and find some coverage on today's opening of it!
ReplyDeleteThis is fascinating. I saw the opening on television with the great fireworks display. Loved those fountains that moved sinuously with the music.
ReplyDeleteA sitting target my friend.
ReplyDeleteI hear it has a 6foot sway too.
of course they built it quickly, considering they use what can easily be called modern slavery labor
ReplyDeleteLove your photo. Watched the opening live in Abu Dhabi on Dubai One TV - Awesome!
ReplyDeleteCertainly impressive in terms of design and engineering but isn't it also a monument to wealth, consumerism and excess?
ReplyDeleteNot so impressive from my point of view.
