Misty Moments

The fog which we experienced yesterday evening was still in evidence today, even in the Old Market Square at lunchtime.

I met up with my workmate who is a photographer too, as he wanted to have a go with my 40-150mm, f2.8 lens. He has just converted to Olympus from Fuji, and wanted to try my lenses out, to see if they would suit his style of photography.

So while he was having a go with that, I was using another lens. So decided to take a photo of the Council House, which was bathed in grey.

Apparently tomorrow's weather should be a lot better, so we'll see what what is on offer for our cameras.

Foggy Bottom

Here's another shot from yesterday's foggy cycle ride through Highfields.

Not a lot to say about this almost silhouette of a tree by the lake, other than it looks a bit mysterious and haunting.

Duckling And Diving

Nottingham woke up wrapped up in a deep blanket of fog this morning. So I made a small detour through Highfields, to see how the park looked in the mist.

Everywhere was shrouded in grey. Trees, the lake, the Lakeside Theatre.  I took lots of photos, but I was looking for something a little different.

Whilst I was taking some photos of the misty lake, one of the large birds started honking. Then I knew why. Looking down I saw a little chick running about. Obviously a protective parent looking after their baby.

Then the baby bird made their way through the railings and waddled towards me. Then they decided to stop and have a drink from a puddle near me. Just in the right spot for a photo. I then noticed that the chicks' other parent was watching their baby from the top of the railings. One proud parent looking out for the baby.

A Hazy Shade Of Winter

I'm not sure exactly what happened to this photo, but that's how it appeared, when I downloaded it into Lightroom.

It's quite a strange effect, like there's a very bad snowstorm happening, or a dense fog. But it's just been a normal, slightly cold day.

Review Of The Year - January & February

The countdown to Christmas is well and truly underway, so I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the past year through some photographs taken on the Olympus OMD, which I now use as my main camera.

January saw some bad weather in snow, fog and just generally very cold.  So here's the bell tower of the Council House shrouded in mist. Not quite the pea soupers of the 1940s & 50s, but still quite bad.

February was a lot better, and it also heralded my 50th birthday & 7th wedding anniversary. For a treat, Gail and I went to Portmeirion in North Wales for a weekend break. It was lovely and sunny, but sadly not warm enough to leave our coats off.

The remains of this child's bike was situated on the beach at Criccieth. I like the various textures of the rocks, the sand and the rust on the bike, all brought to life through the dramatic tone filter.

A Sepia Moment

A bit of a grey day today. Although the snow has completely disappeared now, the sun hasn't replaced it. But the wind has. It was a bit of a struggle cycling to and from work today. Headwind all the way on bot journeys.

I was hoping to show a photo or two of a demonstration that took place at lunchtime in the Old Market Square. But there were only about six people there. So it wasn't worth it.

I have therefore nothing new today. So it's a quick raid on the archive, and thought I'd show this from a foggy ride through Highfields a couple of weeks ago.

Day For Night

Here's another of my 'compare and contrast' shots. This time it's the Lakeside Arts Centre in Highfields.

Above was yesterday morning. Below was taken tonight. I like the way that the roof section, which looks like the upturned hull of a boat glows with a blue aura, and the building itself looks alive now that the lights have been switched on.

The Lakeside Arts Centre is actually made up of two buildings, a theatre and an exhibition space. The building here is called the D.H Lawrence Pavilion, and hosts many drama, music and dance productions. If you want to see what sort of things go on there here is a LINK to their website.

Misty Eyed

Well 24 hours later and similar views from top of the multi-storey car park, but completely different weather conditions.

The fog started to fall last night, and has held Nottingham in its grey shroud all day long, with not a single break .

It is still foggy, and temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight, with the probability of snow over the weekend.

So it should be fun cycling to work tomorrow morning!

Misty Moments

I think everyone, including the weather people were a bit surprised to wake up and finding Nottingham covered by a misty shroud.

Apparently visibility was quite poor at first light, but it had eased a bit when I cycled off to work. Still the fog made a trip through Highfields worthwhile. A shame that it wasn't the 'pea-souper' like England used to get in the 1950s, but it was worth stopping off and trying to get a few shots.

Above you can see the boating lake and can just about make out the clock tower of the Trent building. While below is a low shot of the fallen leaves and some of the railing that surrounds the lake. Shame that all the ducks had hidden themselves away, as one would have added a little extra interest to the picture.

The Night Closes In

Last night it became very foggy for a while. I don't know if it was due to the weather or down to the many fireworks parties that had taken place in my neighbourhood. I tried taking some photos from my front garden, but they didn't come out very well. So messing about in Picasa, I created this nighttime scene.
