A photo a day from the famous East Midlands city, its surroundings, and wherever the photographic journey takes me.

Snow Going
I had a very long and difficult drive to Manchester today. It took just about twice as long as it should have.
Firstly there were some roadworks on the M1, so speed was restricted to 50mph, instead of the usual 70mph. This of course resulted in vehicles going at 40mph, and sometimes coming to a standstill.
Next came some rain, which made driving hard work, as there was so much spray about. It was like being in a car wash.
Then when I got on the road that runs through the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire it was snowing. And snowing quite hard at times. In fact in one part, there was no movement of traffic at all. I think we were all stuck in the same spot, or moved very slowly forward for almost an hour.
Finally when I reached Manchester, there was a lot of building work going on. So roads were closed, a few diversions or single lanes. There was one particular main road that had single file traffic on each side, and on the side I was on, there must have been about twenty buses all in a queue, and not going anywhere. So that added to my journey time.
The return journey was a little easier, except for the dreaded roadworks on the M1. But what got me, was the fact that I couldn't see anyone working. But isn't that always the way?

Watching The Detectives
Have you ever thought about what an author of murder stories might look like? Will they resemble someone who enjoys killing people?
I think most people know what Agatha Christie looks like from photos and films about her. From what I've remember, she looks like your favourite old aunt. But one that has bumped an awful lot of people off with her pen!
So I wondered what I was letting myself in for when I went to my local library this afternoon, to listen to thriller writer Stephen Booth. He was giving a public talk about his life and work. Will he be waiting to pounce on us as we went through the door, waving a pick axe about. Blood splattered on the walls?
Well no, he actually looked quite normal. Someone with a kind face. Stephen spoke for well over an hour about his early life in Lancashire and his interest in books. Even though there was only three in the house. He even managed to write a novel when he was 12 years old. He also answered questions from the audience of about 40 people, who sat glued to every word.
Once he had finished his degree at university, Stephen got a job as a journalist on a local newspaper, where he got to know the local police. This gave him the spark to start writing properly, and completed his first murder story, set in the Derbyshire Peak District in 1999. It featured two young detectives called Cooper & Fry, and was entitled 'Black Dog'. He's just about to have his 16th novel published, which also features the dynamic duo.
I must admit, I have never read one of Stephen's books, or even heard of Cooper & Fry before. I will though, especially now, as the stories may be televised in a new series that is presently going through the development stage.
There was an opportunity at the end of the talk for his fans to buy any novels that they didn't have, get them signed and personally chat to him.

Sundowner
Many towns across the country have been suffering with constantly dull skies this week. Apparently it has been caused by a sand storm over the Saharan Desert.
Nottingham hasn't escaped. We've not seen the sun at all since about Tuesday lunchtime. The sky has been grey ever since. I haven't even managed to take any photos, and I try to take at least one everyday.
So it's a quick look in the archive, and here's one that I took on Sunday, at Butterley in Derbyshire.
The sun was going down when I took this. I like the reflection of the sunlight on the water as it disappears for the night.

Leading Lines
Whilst visiting Ripley we stopped off at Butterley Railway Station. Being late on Sunday, it was obviously closed. But it didn't stop me from having a poke around.
There were a row of old carriages not connected to an engine. They just seem to have been left there. So looking for a way of taking them that looked interesting, I went for the good old leading lines and perspective, with a bit of a glow from the sun setting.

Mother's Pride
Gail and I went to Ripley in Derbyshire today to see the new photo studio that a modelling friend of ours has just opened.
You've seen photos of Kelli Smith on here before, and she is having to give up modelling shortly as she is expecting her first child; a little boy that she and her partner Tim are calling Lawson.
Just as I parked my car in a nearby car park, I noticed the flash of a red E Type Jag in the corner of the car park. So out came my camera and I took a couple of shots.
It was difficult in trying to get a good angle, as there wasn't a lot of space to work in. So I decided to try an aerial view instead, as there was some steps that led to the beer garden of a pub aptly called the Red Lion.
I must say that Kelli and Tim have done a good job of creating a great photographic space, with many different areas to shoot in; an American diner, a Parisian cafe, a Versace bedroom, a library amongst others. They have nearly finished a shower area for wet shots.
There were quite a number of photographers there when we arrived, including a couple that we knew. So it was good to catch up and see what everyone was doing.
Of course I have to show another photo of Kelli, thai I took at our studio, who's showing of her baby bump. After all it is Mother's Day.

It's Bath Time
As it was such a lovely day, Gail thought we should go out and make the most of it. So we packed our camera gear and headed off for Matlock Bath in Derbyshire.
A lot of other people must have had the same idea, as the town was heaving with people, mainly bikers in their black leather outfits.
We had a stroll around, then stopped off at one of the many fish and chip shops for a plate of Britain's favourite food.

Kelli 2
Another shot of model Kelli Smith, taken last week at a studio in Long Eaton.
I don't think anymore words are needed.

A Model Pooch
This is Pinot, and is Kelli's special pet dog. A chihuahua of course, and a tiny one at that.
So cute and so full of life. Everyone was making a fuss of her. And no wonder. She is a little sweetie.

Kelli
It's been a quite a while since Gail and I have been to a model shoot. So tonight we made amends and drove over to Long Eaton, where we met up with model Kelli Smith and a few other photographers for three hours of taking pictures and having fun.
We've shot Kelli before, nearly two years ago at another studio, so it was nice to meet up again. She is getting married in July, and retiring from modelling, so it was a opportunity not to be missed.

Model Material
What happens if you mix five photographers with a dozen models in a great studio, with lots of sets, lights and props?
The answer is hopefully some great photographs.
Well that's exactly what Gail and I have been doing for most of the day, at this converted factory in Long Eaton.
And what fun we had. Being given a model to work with for about 30 minutes, and using the different backdrops, such as bedroom, barn, hospital and with a real motorbike.
This particular model is called Lily and very good to work with she was too. She had not been modelling that long, but was very relaxed in front of my Nikon as we played around with the sets and poses.
Before anyone asks, no she wasn't naked, but was wearing a tight cream coloured latex dress. The power of the camera eh!

Symbols And Meanings
Richard has chosen this week's Headbanger Challenge theme of Symbols. And it's certainly one to get the little grey cells working overtime, as Hercule Poirot would say, as he's trying to solve the latest murder mystery.
My little grey cells certainly worked overtime in trying to think up something interesting and unusual for my photo entry. I found the image that I was looking for at an art exhibition that Gail & I went to on Saturday.
The exhibition had the unusual title of The Carnival of Monsters and the image I thought 'bingo' to was one by artist Emma Dex Dexter. It is a sculpture actually Called Vortex2. You look at the artwork through a small perspex window and it symbolises the TARDIS and creates the illusion of infinite space.
I spoke to Emma, and she was happy for me to take a photograph of her graphic artwork. I used one of the art filters on my OM-D to boost the energy of the piece. I showed Emma the photo and she asked if I could send her a copy, which I happily did.
Don't forget to pop over and see the rest of the team's images, and enjoy this musical interlude.
At the invitation of a photographer friend of ours, we joined him on his small boat called 'Sarah', this evening, which is berthed at a marina not too far away from us. We were joined by another friend, and we spent a very pleasent couple of hours taking some night shots like this one and chatting about our favourite hobby over some tea and biscuits.

First Of The Summer Wine

Gail & I shot a friends' marriage blessing in Long Eaton today & then went to Trent Lock Marina to take some photos of the happy couple in a relaxed environment.
It was a blessing, as they had got married in Holland, a few weeks ago. Alas we didn't get to cover that, as I've never been to Holland before, and it would have been a good experience.
It's been a lovely sunny day today. Almost too sunny! And hot too. The sort of weather which we should have got during July and August.
We have never visited Trent Lock before, so it was a bit of an adventure. It was a great place to walk around. Maybe bigger than Beeston Marina. Certainly a lot busier.
Whilst we were having a look around for suitable places to stop for photographs, I saw these three young girls relaxing and enjoying the warm weather; so I just couldn't resist taking a shot.
