No Work for a Grease Monkey

Cars have been around for a hundred years, but it seems that garages come and go. By the look of this one, it hasn't seen an engine in years. I'd be very interested to see what lurks behind those faded green doors. What history could be revealed. Old newspapers, calendars, receipts. Maybe an abandoned car still waiting for its owner to come back? For those of you that are interested, it's location is the Derby Road end of The Ropewalk.

I used to occasionally work in the old Hooleys garage around 10 years ago. It was still in use at the time as all the new cars were cleaned and polished there prior to delivery.

Nothing particularly remarkable about the interior and no historical documents or cars unfortunately. I believe it was once a water pumping station which supplied The Park - there is a tower, just visible to the right ,containing the tank. I heard that it was closed due to contamination of the water from the nearby cemetary.

  3. I am a 6th year architecture student at the University of Nottingham. i am currently working on my thesis project and have taken Hooleys garage as my site. I would really appreciate any information on the garage and would be particularly interested in getting in touch with the person who used to work there.

I worked as a bodyshop apprentice in the early 80s. That building was used as preparation for New Cars and also for paintwork and body damage. Stan Hooley was the original owner and the business was many years old. It was always very busy, mainly due to the fact that new cars were sold in much larger numbers in those days. We even used to have to make our own number plates and had a special machine to do it. The big dealership was on the Derby Road and had a great presence. It was a fantastic place to work. I drove bye only last week and found its all gone now. Very sad.
