Going, Going, Gone
Today's Skywatch Friday picture is a bit different, it is the back of the old Odeon cinema. It's been closed now for well over 10 years. The council yesterday voted in favour for a developer to come and knock it down and replace it with yet another office block. One that will shade the light out of the library close by. Many local groups have opposed the plans as it will spoil the area, but they've been passed anyway. It's been another grey day today. The sun showed it's face, didn't like what it saw and disappeared again

LOL on "sun showed its face didn't like what it saw and disappeared". Wish I have that option each day I pop my head in my office :) Just kidding.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend.
Gray skies over the doomed building! Nice shot. I hate it when 'they' build without consideration.
ReplyDeletePretty similar with ours in Indonesia. Grey, grey, cloudy... Though, holidays is coming! Happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteThe grey skies are the perfect portent of dom for this project. Just who do they suppose will occupy those office blocks when there will be no jobs left. Very sad demise of yet another Odeon
ReplyDeleteThere's something very sad about a building like that going.
ReplyDeleteOne thinks of all the romances that started there; all the Saturday Morning kid's matinees; the pop acts that played there in the days of the Larry Parnes tours; etc.
Yes, things change, and we move on. But it always seems such places which once enriched our lives in the city centre, are replaced with offices which somehow symbolise a 9 - 5 means of suppressing it.
Sigh. It's always tough when an investor can't be found for buildings like these. We have a similar problem with an old stage theater — it's lovely and a piece of Manila history, but it's been abandoned for years. The location is bad and no one knows what to do with it.
ReplyDeleteWish I could wish you Happy Sky Watching, but this is pretty sad news. Even here, halfway around the world, we've heard of the Odeon cinema. I think we even had one named after it ages ago.
Very good post my friend, you are an expert in turning a plain sky into a wonderful photo and story.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am sorry,it is saddening to see lod landmarks disappearing in favour of glass fronted cabinets. Councils can be very destructive in the name of progress, or are there little deals done behind closed doors?
