A Roaring Success

This is one of the two lions that guard the entrance to the Council House. They have done it since the late 1920s when the building and square were built. Most first dates began with "Meet you at the lions". These days the council have stopped people from even standing on the steps inbetween them, and are often roped off. You are still fortunately allowed to take photos of them.

  3. They don't like using the steps of Ashton Town Hall these days either - hope Gail enjoyed her chips - it is a shame about the one that used be in the six-shops as I now live within walking distance of it and the nearest decent one now is just a bit too far to walk back from without them getting cold.

  4. Hahaha it is the most obvious meeting place for anything!
The ropes never stop the students climbing on them at night though....

Probably as much photographed as the Robin Hood statue at the castle... and much more comfortable to sit on.

  6. The carving in the photograph didn't attract me as lion. It can be appreciated for other reasons, bur definetely not as a lion. The sculpture doesn't expresses the majesty or strength of a lion.I can appreciate the photograph for proper use of light and shade, capturing the contours, but not the original sculpture.

  7. It was always the lion on the right for me;would not dream of meeting anyone at the other one.
