Bombs Away
Today there was a small demonstration in the Market Square. Not against the council this time, but against nuclear weapons. Today, 64 years ago, the first atomic bomb was dropped over the Japanese town of Hiroshima, killing thousands. Another one was released a few days later over Nagasaki. It might not have been the best move to make, but at least it bought world war 2 to an end after six years.
Lets hope they never have to drop another.
Nearly 30 years ago OMD had a hit called Enola Gay, which was about the B29 that dropped the bomb. You can see it here

Love the photograph, and the politics :)
ReplyDeleteVery interesting... let us hope Russia, North Korea, and China feel the same way!
ReplyDeleteThose two bombs are probably one of the reasons why more have not been dropped. I worked on the photochromic goggles to protect the retina of pilots who dropped the bombs on Bikini Atoll. They didn't have anything in Japan.
ReplyDeletei really hope they won't drop another...
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteI am Japanese.
Interesting photo. Sometimes I think people protest just because they have nothing better to do. I hope we don't have to drop a nuclear bomb, but really, has there been serious enough talk about it to protest?
ReplyDeleteMeaningful foto! Never again!
ReplyDeleteYeah lets hope they never have to drop another because this time it will be the end. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteTo Avery K
ReplyDeleteYou are wrong about Russia. Most ordinary russian's people is not evil. And as well as all is don't whant to fight with anybody. Especially with nuclear weapon.
Never again!

ReplyDeleteAs I'm a S.Korean...i really hope they won't drop another, Build another, Develop another, Spread another...
ReplyDeleteP.S...Probably it's Enough to be the Blog of note guess....Thanks so posts...
That just sounds so strange that OMD Enola Gay is almost 30 years old, and just over half that time again the first off those bombs was dropped. You know me I love a demonstration.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever pay a visit to either of those cities you will never want to see such a disaster happen again. It was not a justifiable way to end the war.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, I've never seen a protest that brought focus to the Hiroshima and Nagaski bombings, very interesting..
ReplyDeleteCool articles, no wonder your a blog of note.

Glad that you focused on this. I don't agree that the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs brought the war to an end inasmuch as it would have ended very soon without their use and they were more to do with politics than strategy, but that's a much longer story.
ReplyDeleteSad fact is, that we still have enough of them to destroy the world many times over. And I would add, to JarieLyn, that, yes, we do need to protest because when we stop, someone, somewhere will think it's OK to consider using this awful weapon again.
Good on you for marking Hiroshima Day.
ReplyDeleteHow about world peace? That would be....well....peaceful.
ReplyDeleteI initiated a spontaneous gathering in our civic square in Tones, Devon. thursday 6th august...
ReplyDeleteto remember those who suffered in Hiroshima and to Imagine a world of peace.
I have done this kind of thing before in the civic square in Totnes.
I"ve never experienced a response like we had before.
There were just three of us women and one child who brought paints, chalks,
flags, songs , flowers and held the space for three hours, sometimes singing,
and talking with people. a few people joined in , children helped colour in
the chalk peace mandala.
At around 4pm when we were starting to think about packing up. a man in
uniform came storming towards aggressively walking deliberately over the
artwork and shouted at us telling us we had to clear it away as it was
graffiti and we were commiting an offence!!!( he called himself a street
scene officer we were shocked , couldn't really take
him seriously ,pointed at that it was just chalk and would wear away of its
own accord very fast. he demanded we give him our names which we declined to
do. he then proceeded to try to take our photos which we also objected to ,
turning away, etc.
he stormed off threatening us with court action.!!
we were shocked, intimidated, upset by the incident , the little girl was
frightened by the aggressive behaviour. a horrible ending to a
positive creative response of solidarity with other peace actions being held
all around the world that day .
This is Alternative Totnes !! I don't call it demonstrating as that has quite negative conotations, i called it an event for peace and a commeration for those that suffered and still suffer.
peace and love
