Worth It's Weight In Gold

There was a bit of good news on the TV news last night. The former Woolworth's in the Victoria Centre is going to be turned into a pound shop. So I paid a visit today to see what was happening. Apparently it's going to be the biggest one in the country. I'm not sure if that's something for the city to be proud of or not. This means that there will be 12,500 sq feet of tat for sale. Although to be honest, they do have some good things in occasionally, like books, dvds and model cars. But a lot of it is rubbish and a waste of the worlds declining resources. Badly painted figures, plastic things that no one quite knows what they are for and tacky party decorations are amongst the delights on offer. At least some new jobs will be created.

I have to thank some fellow bloggers who left congratulatory messages on yesterday's entry. It seems that my page has become a 'blog of note'. I didn't know anything about it. So thanks to those that selected it for inclusion into the hall of fame.

    Hi,

    nice blog, and cool pictures.

Cheap plastic things will someday be a collector item, well at least if they are properly primed and painted with a nice colour.

    Nice to meet you,
    Jesse

  5. congrats on becoming a blog of note AND a new poundland - in Croydon we 3 , a poundland, poundstretcher and a Poundstore plus a few other independent shops that just sell a lot of things for a pound. We also have a scandinavian upmarket version - woolworths meets Ikea in a 'Usefulshop'

  8. Don't know about PoundWorld, but in the US, "Dollar Trees" or other supposed 'dollar stores' often have things for much more than one dollar. In which case, may I ask, what is the point?

  17. Being a blond farm chick from a Ozark farm hidden deep in the states, I do not understand the concept of a pound store? Do ya'go in and purchase whatever by the pound? 'Said I was blond, didn't I? Or is it like our dollar stores that everything in it is a pound? Little confused here, doesn't take much!LOL Congratulations on your new found fame. I truly enjoyed your pictures.Have a wonderfully blessed day.

  18. Not sure of the history but I think when Woolworths started they had counters where evrything was a penny (or sixpence) so I guess the pound stores are todays equivalent of that. We've maybe half a dozen such stores in Hyde but much as I like bargains I'd sooner pay for a bit better quality some of the time.
    Woolworths here remains empty.

  20. Gerald is right they started out like M&S. We don't have a Poundworld or Poundstretcher here more's the pity. Congrats on the blog of note. Yes I was one of those you recommended it. Well you did kick mine into action and I always enjoy stopping by here.

I hope you are ready for the onslaught of comments. It will calm down eventually. Honest.

  21. I grew up in England and still it took me several seconds to figure out what a "pound shop" was. Apparently, I need more coffee! Here in North America, we call them dollar stores, and they're full of all the same junk you describe. Congrats on the Blog of Note!

  23. PoundWorld... interesting. We have the 99 cent store here in the U.S., and if the products in PoundWorld are even vaguely familiar in the 99 cent store, i can see how you feel disdain for it. But is that shop in a shopping mall? That is curious.
By the way, love your blog

  25. Ah ha! Another 99 cents store (as they are also called in the US) springs up. Sign of the times.

  26. I, as a resident of Nottingham, am extremely pround of our abundance of pound shops! I remember in the summer, my friends and I used to get a 'couple of quid picnic' of skips and capri suns and sit on the arboretum, enjoying the sun :)
great blog btw, at least now I know what's going on around here when I need something to do!
